MEETING WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY

Nur-Sultan, April 9, 2019 – The Center for the Study of China hosted a meeting of the Chairman of the International Information Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Timur Shaimergenov, Adviser to the Department of Asia and Africa of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Abu-Talip Aimakhanov, employees of the Center with the leadership and members of the Special Committee on Foreign Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Kazakhstan Zhou Xiaopei, former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Egypt, Saudi Arabia Wu Syki, as well as representatives of the Chinese Embassy in Kazakhstan, the Shanghai Institute of International Studies (SHIMI), The Center for Russia and Central Asia of the Shanghai Association for International Studies (SHAMI).

During the meeting, the parties discussed the current state of bilateral relations between Kazakhstan and China, issues of regional security, as well as trade and economic cooperation. Thus, in particular, the issues of information wars as new challenges for the countries participating in the Silk Road Economic Belt initiative and ways to solve them became the subject of an exchange of expert opinions.

T. Shaimergenov stressed that ” Kazakhstan is a reliable partner of the Belt and Road initiative, and is aimed at continuing the development of mutually beneficial cooperation between the participating states of the project.”

During the talks, special emphasis was placed on practical cooperation between the two countries in the industrial and investment sphere, the field of digitalization and the export potential of the economies, as well as the prospects of the Astana International Financial Center. Considerable attention was paid to the effective coupling of the Silk Road Economic Belt initiative with the New Economic Policy “Nurly Zhol” and the gradual transition from quantity to quality.

The processes taking place in modern Kazakhstan and Central Asia were discussed separately. In particular, the head of the Center for the Study of China presented the report ” Central Asia 2027: a changing strategic landscape. Probable scenarios for ten years ahead.”

The guests of the meeting were presented with the book “Nazarbayev’s Model” – an attempt of managerial analysis of the state construction of Kazakhstan since the beginning of independence. The Chinese side highly appreciated the role of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbasy N. Nazarbayev in the formation of Kazakh-Chinese relations, which are the standard of good-neighborly relations between the countries.

The participants of the meeting noted the importance and effectiveness of the existing mechanisms of interaction between the analytical centers of Kazakhstan and China, and discussed the prospects for further cooperation.
