On March 14, economic data for January and February were officially published. The press representative of the State Statistical Office of the People’s Republic of China, Mao Shengyong, at a press conference at the Information Bureau of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, noted that the Chinese economy is developing positively.
The role of consumption growth is constantly increasing. In January and February, the total volume of retail sales of consumer goods increased by 9.7% compared to the same period last year, the indicator is 0.2 percentage points higher compared to last year’s data. The acceleration of consumption growth in the automotive industry has become the main source of contribution.
“The increase in car sales is not so fast, but the average cost per unit has increased significantly, which means that the demand for cars is being updated, the structure is being modernized,” Mao Shengyong said. The growth rate of online retail trade exceeded 37%, which is 5.4 p. p. higher compared to the same period last year. Online transactions stimulated the complex development of offline consumption.
The auxiliary abilities of new impulses are constantly increasing. Relatively rapid growth continues in the production of equipment and the field of high technologies. For example, the growth rate in the industrial robot industry exceeded 25%, and in the field of cars powered by new energy sources-178%.
The conditions for high-quality economic development are constantly being improved. In January and February, the unemployment rate in cities and towns of the country was less than 5%, which fell slightly compared to the end of last year and the same period in 2017.
The export growth rate on the basis of last year’s growing indicator reached 18%. Simultaneously with the economic development, the environmental situation in China is improving. In January, the share of days with good weather in 338 cities of the country was 68.6%, which is 8.6 percentage points higher compared to the same period last year. In particular, the proportion of days with clean air in Beijing was 80.6%, which is 29 p. p. higher compared to last year’s indicator.
