March 16, “People’s Daily” online — In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward an initiative to jointly build the “Silk Road Economic Belt” and the “Maritime Silk Road of the XXI Century”. Five years have passed since then, more than 140 world countries and regions are actively responding to this initiative and participating. Within the framework of the construction of the “Belt and Road”, brilliant results were achieved.
On March 11, at a press conference dedicated to the first session of the National People’s Congress of the 13th convocation, Chinese Commerce Minister Zhong Shan shared with journalists the results achieved.
First, the scale of trade is constantly increasing. In 2017, the volume of imports and exports of goods between China and the countries along the “Belt and Road” amounted to 1.1 trillion US dollars, which showed an increase of 14.8% and turned out to be 3.4% higher than the growth rate of China’s foreign trade in general. At the same time, there is a continuous simplification of trade procedures in the Belt and Road countries.
Secondly, the areas of investment are continuously expanding. In total, China has already invested over 60 billion US dollars in the countries along the “Belt and Road ” in the fields of agriculture, manufacturing industries and infrastructure construction.
Third, major projects are being thoroughly promoted, such as the construction of railways, highways, seaports, cooperation in the fields of energy and resource processing, as well as projects in the manufacturing industry. China has built 75 zones of trade and economic cooperation in the countries along the “Belt and Road ” and invested a total of 27 billion US dollars in them.
As Zhong Shan noted at a press conference, China intends to turn the “Belt and Road” into a road of peace, prosperity, openness, innovation and enlightenment. At the next stage, the Ministry of Commerce of China plans to build a number of platforms for international cooperation, in particular, the first Chinese international Import Exhibition. At the same time, the Ministry will invest great efforts in a number of major investment programs, assistance programs for foreign countries, develop e-commerce with countries along the “Belt and Road”, and further promote liberalization and simplification of procedures in the field of trade and investment.
